Crown Heights Sociology: Primary Language of Torah Classes in Crown Heights

While doing some research on Israelis in America, I wound up compiling these figures of the primary language of the classes on Judaism in the neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn.

Primary Language of Torah Classes in Crown Heights

Primary Language

Number of Classes

Percentage

Yiddish

45

27%

English

100

60%

Hebrew

16

10%

Russian

6

4%

Total

167

101% (due to rounding)

Note: Of the total 167 classes listed in their 2011 catalog, there were 12 classes listed as being given in two languages. I have chosen to count them as the (relatively) more particular language, e.g. a Yiddish/English class is counted as Yiddish, Yiddish/Russian is counted as Russian. Four of these classes were listed as Hebrew/English, which I counted as being given in Hebrew. My reasoning is that the class probably caters to speakers of the more particular language, but that the teacher or lecturer is willing to translate into the dominant language for those who request.
